test Renders.... Scene 6

Here are some test renders that I have done for scene 6, this is the ambient occlusion pass. I have also been rendering most of the film on my machine as it's crunching the renders incredibly fast. Far much quicker than college computers will ever be, so my computer has turned itself almost like a rendering farm. I did pop along to the meeting a while back about the college setting up a render farm to support animation. However it would be in beta testing this month and not in time for our deadline far too late to make it happen, which was rather a big disappointment.
But I do appreciate the handwork they have managed to set one up, which will be more useful for the future years.

So here's what I've been up to is that I've finished animating Scene 6 finally! and I did some animating for Scene 7 which is the mice scene where little owl fly's over swiftly into the night. These are nocturnal animals so they are going to be mostly as a silhouette...

With good reason too! I have been doing nothing BUT animating for scene 3, and have now just finished the huge scene 1!
This is the playblast...

Now I'm working on my last scene for the film, Scene 5! This is where my precious Pigeons beat Little Owl up, it should be quite challenging since it has 4 characters interacting AND he has to avoid getting hit by cars and then throw up.....so, all things I've never done before......should be fun :)

So after showing Mike, he too thought I as progressing. All of my friends after showing before and after thought I'd progressed, particularly Jessica. Which I am very pleased as it's Jess' film I need to be able to animate well enough to get a great film out.

Here are version 2 of the previous, with the suggested re-touches from Mike and Jess. I can see it's moving a lot more fluid, perhaps I can lay with timing now.

I'm re-working scene 6 again, but I'm having problems now making the cycle move forward, as he is at an angle it's difficult to get him moving just straight and at an angle...it's cos' I can't just stick in a consistent number to keep him straight. any help and tips?? I can show you on thursday when we next meet up as a group. Also possibly ask Dan if he might know a way to tackle it.

Here is a test I did today of Little Owl taking off and landing. I have not animated for a couple of years so it was intresting to see how it turned out. Thanks Aminata for great feedback.

I did change him standing up a tiny bit slower at the very end, but I did not render the new change out since it takes time.

I changed the camera angle slightly in this scene, so it's a lot more focused on the postcard.... attention drives to the target. Christina agrees this is a better angle. It also now feels a lot more intimate between the owls interaction and the postcard.

I've been tweaking this scene last night after the meeting and it's going really well I think. It's a lot more smoother and I've taken the jumps out, especially at the very beginning of part one where he walks to the postcard stand....

This is an additional part we all agreed on that he should look a the postcard and slightly rub his thumbs on the postcard to sort of indicate that he's home sick and misses his house... i quite like this.

and this is the last part of the scene where he walks away sad with the postcard in his hand....

Yes!! I've finally finished texturing... I'm about 3 days late animating, but it's all good. I'll catch up and will have produced tests by Friday 7th March....

I've also spent a little time modelling a prop for Asa's film "Day that I Died" It's a hospital Trapeze used to help get the disabled out of bed. so I'll bet Asa will be happy to complete a bit more of her hospital set.

Soo HAPPY I can finally start animating... *tear in my eye.

Jess thought that my bat was a bit too evil looking hahaha, well we hadn't really determined what his personality was like so I just did what a bat would look like cartoony. Anyway, she stretched out his mouth a bit and made his face chubbier along with making the eyes a bit more subtle, I like it :)

OK, so this is pigeon no.3 done and dusted, I couldn't make his hair curly like I wanted but I figured we could just put a nice curly texture on him instead and bump map it to save on polys and time.

I know it's been awhile but I've been working more on my dissertation since the due date is drawing ever closer (ahhh!), plus I've been sorting out moving house for the 1st March (wish me luck).

For doing this in 1 day I thought it was pretty good catching up. He hasn't got the thumbs up from Jess yet though.

Oh and he's 4000 polys without the eyes, just couldn't upload that image.

More UV and Texturing

I've done two more props and it has been quite the experience. I notice strange things sometimes when you forget to delete the alpha channel in PhotoShop and try and apply the texture in Maya. It will think that it is trying to do an alpha and when it comes to the Maya port view it looks transparent, however upon rendering it looks fine. So I took out the unnecessary alpha out. I'm also sticking with jpeg format now to be on the safe side, as we're not doing an HD movie!

I'm really proud of my record player, it looks funky!!

UV Mapping & Texturing

UV Mapping is a really long and tedious, probably one of the most boring jobs in world of 3D!! Texturing isn't so bad, because I do enjoy PhotoShop very much. I've had some difficulty understanding UV Mapping, so it's taken me some time. Also I'm only texturing things that are needed and essential, as most of the props won't be seen up close in the camera shots. Solid colours are pretty much applied with a lambert or blinn and adjusting some attributes for them. It works pretty well, and also I found that if the solid colours are not essential to texture I will have run out of space on the UV editor to fit everything in. So use the space wisely.

So here is my first prop I have UV Mapped and textured and thanks to Rey also with a bit of help and advice. Also I found that it's rather difficult to make chrome in Maya as texture..... But thanks tot he internet these days a tutorial goes a long way, and there are lots of ways and combinations to create chrome, I just went the easy way and used a phong material and adjusted some settings.

Yess I have finished modelling all the props assigned to me on "Owl's Day Out" not a bad prediction according to my schedule I made, and ahead of schedule to the meeting that I said I would finish next week Thursday. So now I have the time to learn texturing and also Little Owl is Rigged, so I can now start practice animating, BUT not just yet!

I haven't touched my dissertation in a week so I must do fair-do's of catch up and also create myself a new set of questions ready for interviewing the studios about my thesis. OR I might do a focus group! But that doesn't exactly answer some stuff on my paper.

Ok texturing....here I come bring it on!! sooo badly itching to animate (I'll produce a few tests if I have time this weekend)

Freeze the Robot 5 and Scale

Finally finished ALL of the Robots WoOoOOoo!! and I've started modelling some kitchen utilities, and first one finished is the fridge and second kitchen scales. Only a few more to go and then I can start texturing. GO! meee!! I'm on a roll Jess has kindly helped me out by modelling 3 kitchen props to speed up the process. Yes I know my modelling isn't the greatest, but the good thing is that I've gained experience and it's something to add to my portfolio.

As we are so close to animating, I want to focus more on that than any other things. Animating is my forte and it shall be my specialist skill! I enjoy it, though not very strong at it....Yet!! Watch out though this year, I'm determined as ever!
I've learnt a lot of new techniques and I want to start practicing as soon as these darn props are done! Also dissertation is up in the air a bit, I need to start coming up with some new questions for my interviews with studios.

Eva - send the last robot tonight. Finish fridge, kettle, scales, tap, toast and plate for Thursday the 14th Feb. Texture bed lamp, record player, desktop lamp and retro TV.

Christina - to finish mother owl blendshapes for tomorrow (Wednesday) by 6pm. Model bat (squeeze in schedule between Pigeon 3 and the bus).

Jessica: to model an UV map some of Eva's assets; phone, toast, juice press and can opener (done see below).

Little Owl I will receive rigged on Thursday, I will then also sit down with Dave and rig mother owl.

Robot 3!

So close to finishing all the robots, but because our dissertation drafts were due in on Tuesday, this has caused a delay in my modelling. Dissertation is a lot more intense than I thought.
However catching up soon as my modelling as picked up rapidly once I get back into the flow. I've also been spending some learning time with Jamie (technical lecturer) on UV mapping and texturing. I learnt lots of valuable tools and hoping to apply these very soon.
I've almost finished Robot 4 and will start on robot 5 hopefully tomorrow and as well as the other kitchen props. They hopefully should be a lot quicker, as they seem simpler than robots... but shall see.

I'm waiting for the owl to be rigged so i can start to practice my animation and get back into the animating flow (bit rusty) I will need to do some simple exercises in February back to basics of bouncing ball and walk cycles!! (AHH my nightmare of 2nd year, shall see how quick i can get back in and tackle that one!!)

Other than that I should be UV mapping and texturing in next coming month. so here is Robot 3

so I've managed to finish off another robot, and another one almost soooo close to finished. Then I've still got another 2 to do and little owl's room should be done. Then I start on 8 more kitchen utilities....

I've also done a drawing test while at work. (I'm giving up my training hours at work to do uni work, naughty me!!)

swamped with tasks and in conjunction with dissertation draft due in end of month, so you won't be expecting major load of work as dissertation is quite heavy and full on this term. But Im working so many late nights now, I haven't had a good nights rest yet. Only less than 7 more months to go and I'll be able to sleep a bit.

Retro Dining

I've modelled this cool retro Tv set and also the dining set. I've had a little difficulty trying to understand why on my dining set file if I want a side view of the model and I press "F" which is supposed to frame my selection closer that it displays nothing but Gray!! I've tried View>frame slection and View> Default home
and nothing works...... this should not happen, anyone know??? Perhaps it's a setting?

Ive been researching images and found quite a lot. 60's film posters that could go on Little Owl's wall, or in London;

A wolkswagen ad and some really pretty images I think would look really good in little owls room, so we can see he wants to go to London. The "this is London" book I bought today on Amazon, its shipped from America so it will probably take a couple of weeks to arrive.
I found out that KFC opened their first restaurant 1964 in Britain. It was and still is located in Preston. I dont know when the first opened in London though.

Funky Hair for Little owl

I took 2 versions of Little Owl (one for the top row and one or the bottom, the difference is around the eyes) and put 6 diffrent hair colours on him. I wanted to try out some bright colours since he's a rebellious teenager. What's your opinion?

Turns out that after battling with the flu and cold for almost 3 weeks that during my 3rd week of winter break I had bronchitis which is an infection with my lungs. Hmm must be that dodgy London weather or the air conditioning at work.. who knows....Doctors heavily sedated me for about a week, I was out cold for 2/3 days in bed.

So I've tried really hard to try and catch up. I don't think I'll be able to make all the deadlines.

PPD self analysis
5 robots (I save the best till last) will be challenging but fun to do
Finish remaining concept for "Day that I Died"
Research 60/70's posters/books

hmmm I think my writing part will be ok, once I have enough and all the research I need I can write like mad and let the magic happen.

I've got through two books this winter break too and now reading 2 other new one's.

Status: Currently working on concept for "Day that I Died" I need a break from modelling a bit. Here are some more other models I did for "Owl's Day Out" I can't wait to see the arrangement of the bedroom with all the cool props.

Christmas Work Part 1 - Modelling Props [winter break]

Towards the end of the first semester I've finished modelling some props for "Owl's Day Out". Mainly for his bedroom or the interior of the house. Seeing as my modelling skills are very poor, I did my best. the egg chair was a tough challenge, I attempted it several times, and I couldn't finish it, so I passed it onto Jess to finish it. The reasons why I'm not changing the story.

I will stick to the "London by night" postcard. The option would be to have a tree pub sign, but a tree he could see anywhere in London. The post card is more fun and not so obvious. It's always been an unfunny postcard that makes people think, "What's the point?". Well, here is its point. It's also a bit more obscure than the Pub Sign, which just seems too convenient ie/ an obvious story driver.

I will keep the pigeon fight scene in. The whole story is based on role reversals. The KFC tastes good then he pukes it up, the sun is warm then he gets a sunburn, London is sweet then he gets beaten up. He needs to win over something, it can't be the KFC, it can't be the sun, and it has to be something he met earlier in the story, therefore the pigeons are the only option. He has to triumph over something that earlier beat him to learn that his strengths really are prevalent at night.

He needs to win at the end of the story. He has to go home with a smile on his face, yet racing against time. Without beating the pigeons he goes to London and runs home with his tail between his legs. With the final pigeon scene he learns about his strengths as well as his failings, thus the story is worthwhile.

No one would have made 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' if the story involved him having the idea of taking a day off, then everything went wrong, he had a rubbish day and then to top it off only just made it home in time. He has to risk everything, triumph at the end as a result of his skills (confidence for Ferris, genetic attributes for Owl), and vanquish his foe (headteacher or pigeons). Then the race home becomes a last bit of excitement to really round off the story.

Summer meadow in the outskirts of the city. Dawn with mist and cooler colours, dusk with the warmer scheme and a moonlit landscape.

Script, Owl’s day out. Rough time guide.

Scene 1 -45s
Int. In the tree house, Little Owl’s room - Dawn.
Present - Little Owl, mother owl.

Little owl sitting by the window looking out at the horizon, longing for the day, the sky goes brighter and brighter, birds wake up and fly off. Mother owl comes in and looks annoyed, points at the bed. Little owl tries to answer back but gets told off.
The following morning Little owl sits by the window looking out at the horizon, the sky goes brighter and brighter, birds wake up and fly off, he manages to see a sunbeam cutting through the sky. Mother owl comes in and looks annoyed, points at the bed. Little owl storms off.
3rd morning little owl is already in bed when mother owl peaks in to check on him. When the door is closed he opens his eyes, jumps out of bed, peaks through the curtains but realises that it’s too bright, he puts on his converse shoes and his backpack, gets a welding protection from under his bed, puts it on and jumps out of the window.

Scene 2 -14s
Ext. Woodlands, outside Little Owl’s house on a hill - sunrise
Present - Little Owl.

Little owl sitting on a branch just outside his window whilst the sun rises. He looks at the sun through his welding protection, a couple of bats are trying to sleep hanging off a branch close to him, they look at little owl and wonders what he’s doing out this early. Little owl turns his head to the left and sees a reflection of light in a distance, it is the BT-tower. He gets curious and doesn’t know whether he should go back homer or not, he looks back at his house, then back at the city in the distance, decides to flies off to go and check it out.

Scene 3 -20s
Ext. Above roof tops of London - morning
Present - Little owl, humans.

Little owl flies in over London, realises that it’s lots of things that reflects light here. He spots some people lying sunbathing on a roof terrace. Decides to try it out and dives down. He lands next to the people and a sun lotion bottle. He turns his head around 360 degrees to check what the people are doing. He peaks at the sun lotion bottle and shrugs his shoulder, he lies down on a pile of towels. Happy 60’s music starts playing (Beatles?)

Scene 4a -6s
Ext. Street outside KFC - daytime
Present - Little owl, human legs.

Little owl standing on the street outside a KFC fast food shop. In his hands is a KFC bucket, he swallows the whole bucket in one go. He looks happily up into the sun whilst the camera spins around him.

Scene 4b 5s
Ext Bus driving on road – daytime
Present – Little owl.

Little owl standing at the back of an old bus holding on to the pole, leaning out, wind making his hair-feathers move, he smiles.

Scene 5 -30s
Ext. Trafalgar Square, rush hour road - daytime
Present - Little owl, pigeons.

Little Owl sitting smiling, holding an ice cream on the steps in Trafalgar Square. Suddenly a shadow shades him. It’s a gang of pigeons. They rip of his welding protection and throw away his ice cream, then they pull him away and beats him up, they throw him into the traffic, cars and buses go past almost running him over. He manages to get to the side of the road, falls down in a sitting position on the pavement. He’s starting to cough and gets the whole wrapping of the KFC bucket back up. He looks miserable. A sizzling sound makes clear that he is burnt red by the sun.

Scene 6 -9s
Ext. Card racks outside souvenir shop, street corner - afternoon
Present - Little owl.

Little owl walking on the pavement, dragging his feet behind. He walks past a postcard stand with a completely black ‘London by night’ postcard, he stops and stares at it. Looking closer at the postcard little owl can see his tree house and the moon fade up and down. It triggers off he’s longing for home. He sits down in a street corner with the postcard depressed. He falls asleep.

Scene 7 -28s
Ext. Street corner, Big Ben - evening
Present - Little owl, pigeons.

Ringing, a close up of Big Ben, its 9 pm already and it’s getting dark. You can see mother owl’s angry posture in the clock. Owl is suddenly scared he won’t get home before his mother wake up. In the dusk he sees the silhouettes of the pigeons getting closer. Owl gets scared and curls up in the corner, but when the pigeons get closer you can see that they’re eyes are squinting, they can’t see very well in the dark. Little owl realises that he’s got advantage over them, he flies up and kicks the pigeons in their behinds. Little owl leaves the pigeons without them understanding what’s just happened and heads for home, he flies fast through the city.

Scene 8 -45s
Ext. Forest near owl’s home - dusk
Present - Little owl, miscellanies nocturnal animals.

Back in the countryside he flies low over the fields and hedges. Other animals look up not realising what just went past. He high-fives the bats and makes a loop in the air in front of the moon, he’s home! He’s racing towards his tree house, mother owl is awake and on the way to little owls room! He flies in through his window straight into his bed and pretends to sleep, his mother owl comes in he open his eyes and winks at the camera.

Music Research

I did research on 60’s bands and listened to their music on ITunes store. The bands I liked where; The Kinks, The Who, Herman’s Hermits, Peter and Gordon and Manfred Mann. But maybe we’ll go for something like Beatles? I’m not sure if I want a song that is so well known as the Beatles songs but maybe it will fit in great. what do you think?

So it has been the inevitable, the essay's have been taking some of my time this week, putting on hold the bedroom work. I have not been able to have access to PhotoShop this week therefore i couldn't apply the colours to the owl's bedroom digitally, neither do I have the tools. I have to admit I do feel really ashamed in letting the group down this week due to my absence. However I will get the work done one way or another, and will be in time for the Summative as we are assessed. I don't think we should panic at all on our group film, as far as I know we're still quite on track.

I will be working on Owl's bedroom week coming. ^__^

Colour Mood Board Research - valiant

Jess has kindly bought "Valiant" on DVD and lent it to me, I watched the movie and went through some of the main environments that we could use. The London scenes are very good and also the countryside and hills. There is still yet a lot to go through in the film, as it is a very good reference for our pigeons concept and idea.... As an animator, I can study flying sequences and how birds fly. Though owl's fly slightly differently in terms of their body weight.

I have here some screen shots I thought might be useful. I have made a colour mood board out of them.

Hiya!

Its been a while since I posted anything up on this blogg :S!!

Well after looking through Jessica's london environment moodboards I've done some sketches of the environmet for London: Piccadilly. Its not completed but I just wanted to show an idea of what London could look like in your animation.

For the time being I've only sketched the where the red-circled area

of the photograph below:

I did a few more little owl's tiny differences again. I tried to make him look more like a teenager with making him a bit taller and a bit slimmer. Do u like any of them? (I think I prefer no 5..but maybe 7?)

Hey all, I've gone over Jess' design of little owl, modified him a bit, made him a little chubbier, his leg feathers flare out abit more, plus! I did some thinking as to how he would open his wings to fly and then go back to the hands, so I made the finger tips a bit more square and made a gif in flash to demonstrate how this with change...but unfortunatley blogger.com won't let me show it, so you'll have to wait till Friday.

Treehouses v.2, Little Owl's room color cart v.2, Little Owl character sheet

It was a lot of orange and brown colours in the 60's so I put together another color chart for little owl's room. I found a lot of veneer furniture.

I made a few colour samples on the treehouse. Which house do you prefer?

I also made a few changes to the little owl character, do you like any of them? in that case which version do you like?
